Women’s Economic Empowerment Global Summit (WEEGS)

Advancing Global Action for Women

Women’s Economic Empowerment Global Summit 2017

The inaugural Women’s Economic Empowerment Global Summit was held on December 4–5, 2017 in Sharjah.

Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of NAMA Women Advancement Establishment, NAMA Women Advancement Establishment (NAMA) held the first edition of the biennial Women Economic Empowerment Global Summit (WEEGS) on December 4 and 5, 2017 at the Expo Centre Sharjah.

Our Joint Effort

The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 reinforced the inextricable link between gender equality, human rights, economic growth and environmental sustainability. Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a priority throughout the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Innovative multi-stakeholder partnerships and transformative action are necessary for achieving the SDGs. UN Women has developed a series of high-impact flagship programmes to deepen its efforts and achieve transformative results.

In line with the UAE’s vision and support of women empowerment, both locally and globally, NAMA Women Advancement Establishment announced its support to the flagship programme “Entrepreneurship and gender-responsive procurement” during the UN General Assembly in 2016. NAMA also announced that it would be hosting in partnership with UN Women, the Women Economic Empowerment Global Summit in Sharjah in 2017.

Additionally, the summit initiated discussions with international decision-makers on the development of the flagship programme on entrepreneurship and gender-responsive procurement, helped secure the interest of women entrepreneurs and business owners, as well as presented strategies, opportunities, and case studies to empower women in non-traditional sectors (including – but not limited to – procurement, finance, city planning) that encourage organisations’ commitment for action.

The Summit is held every two years, focusing on women’s achievements in various economic sectors, giving women access to the market and emerging economic sectors, as well as providing a platform to share best practices and commitment to action to create an enabling economy for women.
